Introduction

Honey Garlic Chicken is a delicious combination of juicy, tender chicken coated in a glossy sauce made with sweet honey, fragrant garlic, and savory seasonings. The sauce caramelizes beautifully around the chicken, creating a rich balance of sweet and savory flavors. It’s quick enough for a busy weeknight but feels special enough for a family dinner, especially when served with fluffy rice and vegetables.

Prep Time

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • Chicken breast: Provides tender, lean protein; substitute boneless chicken thighs.
  • Honey: Creates the signature sweet, sticky glaze; substitute maple syrup.
  • Garlic: Adds bold aromatic flavor; substitute garlic powder.
  • Soy sauce: Brings savory depth and balances the sweetness; substitute tamari.
  • Olive oil: Helps brown the chicken beautifully; substitute avocado oil.
  • Cornstarch: Helps create a thicker, glossy sauce; substitute arrowroot powder.

Preparation & Cooking

Step 1: Prepare the Chicken

Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces and pat them dry. Season lightly with salt and black pepper.

Step 2: Make the Sauce

Whisk together honey, soy sauce, minced garlic, and cornstarch with a few tablespoons of water until smooth.

Step 3: Brown the Chicken

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 5–7 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and nearly cooked through.

Step 4: Add the Sauce

Pour the honey garlic sauce over the chicken. Stir well so every piece is coated.

Step 5: Simmer

Reduce the heat to medium and cook for 3–5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens into a glossy glaze and the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) internally.

Step 6: Serve

Remove from the heat and garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions. Serve immediately over rice, noodles, or vegetables.

Tips

  • Cut the chicken into evenly sized pieces so everything cooks at the same rate.
  • Don't use extremely high heat after adding the honey because the sauce can burn quickly.
  • Let the sauce simmer until glossy and thick enough to coat the chicken.
  • Add sesame seeds and green onions just before serving for extra texture and freshness.
